HD-DVD dead?

Has Blu-ray won the HD wars? Some sources believe so. "Toshiba may be ready to pull the HD DVD format entirely after suffering a series of key defeats, says a claimed source of Hollywood Reporter." Read Toshiba to axe HD DVD in weeks?

Blu-ray and HD-DVD were both released when I was working for Best Buy. From the start it became obvious who the favored format was. Blu-ray got preferable end-cap space and had better looking, flashier displays. The selection of movies available on Blu-ray was also better. In a war were content is king, declaring Blu-ray the victor early on made sense. But as a fan of Toshiba it is kind of sad to have seen them pour millions into a format that doesn't seem to be getting too far. Oh well.

It is sad, but they are a huge, multi-national company. They will survive. The bigger, more exciting notion is one of conclusion. Conclusion to this stupid format war, regardless of who wins, is a win for the consumer. A month ago, no one dared dream the format war would end for at least another year. Now its death *appears* eminent. Hallelujah.

Toshiba has decided to cut its loses altogether and has announced that they will halt production of all HD-DVD products. You are right about this being a win for consumers. Plus, it is a HUGE boost for Blu-ray. With HD-DVD out of the picture, no pun intended, people can now have confidence in buying Blu-ray.
